SHALOM ACHSHAV (PEACE NOW)
Cover art by Micah Bazant
My new song “Shalom Achshav (Peace Now)” is streaming everywhere and available for purchase on Bandcamp (all proceeds towards The Sameer Project)
I wrote this song earlier this year in an effort to reflect on the Jewish values I was taught growing up around peace, war, violence, and conflict resolution; values that I still live by. I looked into Jewish liturgy through the ages and chose pieces that resonated with me…
-
Thus [God] will judge among the nations
And arbitrate for the many peoples,
And they shall beat their swords into plowshares
And their spears into pruning hooks:
Nation shall not take up sword against nation;
They shall never again know war.
- ספר ישעיהו (Sefer Yeshayahu, book of Isaiah)“Love your neighbor as yourself”
- LeviticusThe concept of “Olam Habah” - The World to Come - the age of peace that is meant to come when Moshiach (the messiah) arrives.
I wanted to take these passages and give them new life and meaning. This song is both a prayer and a promise, meant to be sung with others—the chorus is a “nigun” - wordless melody of the Ashkenazi Jewish tradition, which makes it easy for others to join in.
While a genocide rages, while intentional starvation persists, while occupation and supremacy reign, when lives of all ages are so callously taken and perspectives in my community of origin and all around the world are shattered, what does it mean to create art? What does it mean want people to listen?
The only way I know how to live is to keep creating and channeling my thoughts and experiences into my music and work. These past couple years have collectively been the most devastating of my lifetime, but my only hope for this song is that it can be something you can turn to in moments of need, to feel connected, bolstered, supported in your righteous fights for justice and know that you are not alone. text goes here

I've been writing songs and singing as long as I can remember. Words of poetry turn into songs that must be sung.
I process my world, inner and outer, through the sounds and movements that flow through my body.
My art is a reflection, a rejection, a record and a prayer.
I sing to connect with others and myself, to embrace collective joy, suffering, and wisdom.
I compose to remember my tradition and to break from it.
I play to encourage questions, dreams, dances, and revolutions.
I harmonize with my darkness while searching for a greater balance.
I make music so I don't forget to see light in the world.
